El Salvador

So I got on a bus and traveled to a different country last week… seems kind of crazy. We had spring break and I had the opportunity to go to El Salvador last week. It was wonderful. I went with 8 other girls.
Here are some pics of me and two of my beautiful friends.

I had a few first this trip:
1. First time in the Pacific Ocean.
2. First time seeing black sand.
3. First Time boogie boarding
4. First time watching surfers live.
5. First Time hiking up a volcano
6. First time looking inside a Volcano. =)
7. First time in El Salvador!

We started by getting up at 4 in the morning on Thursday to call a taxi and get to the bus station on time. We left the bus station around six. We rode in a nice charter style bus for about 10 hours. Elena was a wonderful bus buddy. The time seemed to pass pretty quickly. We took this bus from Tegus to San Salvador. After arriving in San Salvador we took one of the public busses for 60 cents to La Libertad, a port town. From there we took one more bus to our own area, Tunco Beach. We stayed at a Hostel. It was very nice for a Hostel, we had 3 beds in each room and a bathroom. There was a cool patio area with hammocks and Wifi and a pool.

Then, you walk down the little street for about a minute and you arrive at the beach. The beach was absolutely gorgeous. It had black sand and HUGE waves, so there were tons of surfers.

The first night we mostly just watched the sunset a little and got dinner together. There were tons of little restaurants along our little street with delicious food.

I had:
1. A burger and fries (it was good and only 3 dollars)
2. El Salvadorian Barbecue with steak
3. Pupusas
4. Delicious Pizza
5. A chicken Torta (a sandwhich)
6. Waffles and fruit
7. Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes
8. The best smoothies ever (strawberry, banana, and pineapple)
9. coffee from a delicious little coffee shop that did stuff USA style, it was SO good. It made me feel like I was at McConn. I had a Milky Way. =)

I also learned how to boogie board and how to not die in the ocean thanks to the training of Elena and Estee who are used to the giant waves. It was so much fun! When we caught a big one it felt like you were flying all the way to the shore.

Another highlight of the trip was reading. I had a contest with my students to see who could read more pages over break. I won. =) I read 620 pages. I read
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
Bad Beginning: A series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
Speak (by I don’t remember who) I only got half way through this one
The Four Loves by CS Lewis (Only part of that one as well)

I loved having time to journal, read, and just think over these days. It was very relaxing.

I also got to hike a Volcano! Which was definitely a first. It was between a 7 and 8 mile hike and towards the end it was starting to get difficult. We started by going down the side of the small mountain we were on. Then we hiked up the volcano and saw an amazing view. The Volcano was called the Santa Ana volcano, and it last erupted in 2005. It is still considered active. In the middle of it there is a beautiful turquoise lake that is made because of sulfur. On the way back we had to hike back up the stairs we went down at the beginning which for me was when I was most tired.

Overall, I had a wonderful trip and got to see some cool stuff. I’m looking forward to the next new adventures! I’ll keep you updated!
