I am a bit overdue for a blog update....sometimes I just get a little crazy.
The past few weeks have been crazy, so that kind of explains it.
Currently I am sitting in my classroom while my students have spanish class and just watching them. I am filled with love for them today. They can be difficult, even today. They were having a hard time paying attention, but they really did pretty well today.
I just now caught one of my students pretending to feed a paper baby with his water bottle. It is their "new child". Seriously, how do they come up with this stuff?
Another day a while ago, my students brought in a "class pet". It was a small gecko that died within the day on its construction paper habitat.
Some quotes that have been some of my favorites in the past weeks:
Me: So this a non-count noun. It means you can't count it. It is an idea. You can't see it or smell it or hear it. For example, Love.
Student: Yes, miss. You can smell it.
ME: You can smell love?
Student: YES.
Me: REally? What does it smell like?
Student: Chocolate.
WE learned a song to learn about indefinite pronouns in writing class last week and the kids surprisingly loved it. It's to the tune of she'll be coming around the mountain. Anyways, one of my students informed me:
Miss, That song is very sticky.
WE are starting a new unit about world hunger in my class (more on that later) and a part of this project involves donating food and other things to needy children who live in the dump here in Honduras. Unfortunately, the kids have a hard time with the word dump. One of the students confused me for a while by asking me about the children in the Trash Can.
I also started a new thing this week to reduce the amount of tattling during class time. This is our complaint book. IT has gotten much better throughout the week and I have seen an improvement, but the first day was ridiculous. My students' favorite thing to tell me is that some one is bothering them. They also frequently confuse the words say, tell, and call. Here are a few examples:
Miss, ____ is buddering all time.
_______ is always buttering about me and I am tired.
______ is always seeing at us.
When I was writing complaints he said he would write 12 complaints about us.
_____ invented the complained it is not true.
He always says me loser because he finishes first.
It's not fair that I sit by 3 boys, can you change my seat?
________ told me that I am so complained. (This particular student was responsible for at least 5 of the entries, so she is complaining in the complaining book about someone telling her that she was complaining.)
___________ is always bodering.
_________ always tells me "I'm gonna say Miss Yoder."
(My response to this one is, tell him to say it all he wants, it's not going to help anything)
Basically, my children really like to complain and luckily I have been able to solve some of these problems and laugh about some of them.
Moving on to other things, we just began a unit about world hunger. The students are going to be learning how to write a research paper and we will be researching hunger together. We will be look at "If the world were a village..." A great book. You can find more info about it at this website: http://www.iftheworldwereavillage.org/
I'm really excited to help my students realize how much they have to be thankful for and how much they as individuals can do for the world. From my perspective, being here there is only so much I can do for the country of Honduras as a single white woman. However, in training these students I am training the future leaders of this country. They have the ability to minister and to do things I could never do here. Seeing the possibilities within the ripple effect, the impact of this unit and the other things I say and do can be huge! Please join me in praying for my students and their futures. They have so much potential and carry so much hope for this country and the world.
God has really been showing me what a difference prayer can make. I have been praying for my students almost every morning with another teacher and I am hoping to start meeting with more teachers after school at some point to start praying for the whole school. God is stirring in the hearts of my students and the other students and is doing awesome things. I have already seen a difference, but I believe even more can happen.
I also had my first doctor's visit, since I've been here, last week. I actually had to go to the hospital because that was the only thing open on the weekend. I had my blood drawn with a terrifying needle and received a giant shot, and if you know me, neither of these things are fun. Thankfully, Bethany, my new next of kin, was there to hold my hand. I am feeling much better after some strong antibiotics and other medicines. From my understanding, I definitely had sinusitis, and then something else, I personally think it was probably Bronchitis. Thank the Lord, it wasn't Dengue.
Well, currently I can't think of anything else, but I will be sure to write again if I do!
Here are some specific ways you can pray for me and my students:
- Pray that my students eyes would be opened through the lessons.
- Pray that my students would continue to learn to listen and be attentive and that I would have patience even when they don't.
- PRay for my ability to be firm and kind. I really struggle with the firm part, it's jsut difficult!
- Pray for health for me and the other students and teachers.
- Pray for me and the other teachers over the holiday, as it can be difficult being away from friends and family.
- PRay for revival and raising up of leaders in both the elementary, Jr. high and High School.

again i LOVE the stories and quotes jennifer! :) i am so proud of you for the way you're allowing God to use you with your students. it's neat to hear you talk about the power of praying for your students and also it's neat that you're recognizing the way God is using you to impact these kids and send them out to do great things!
ReplyDeleteyou have given me a good reminder of the need to pray for the students i work with through my practicum!
