Excuses
Yesterday I got to thinking about homework and following directions etc. with my class. Really, my class is usually great at following direction and turning things in, but all of them occasionally have a slip up. Here are some of the most typical excuses:
1. I forgot.
2. I didn't hear you say it.
3. I didn't understand.
4. I lost it.
5. I was in the bathroom.
6. ________ was distracting me, or it was ______'s fault.
7. Well, I did some of it.
8. I was busy.
What dawned on me is that so often I take these same excuses and give them to God when he asks me to do something.
1. I forgot--- I was thinking about other things.
2. I didn't hear you say it.--- but was I actually listening.
3. I didn't understand. --- But did I ask to understand?
4. I lost it--- somewhere along the way, I set aside God's plan for me and started to make my own plan.
5. I was in the bathroom--- not literally, but I was doing something else that I thought I needed or wanted more than what God wanted.
6. Someone else was distracting me or it was their fault. --- Either I let someone else's advice tell me more about who I should be or I get too distracted by relationships to pay attention to God.
7. I did some of it. --- God doesn't ask us to follow him halfheartedly.
8. I was busy--- I don't have time in my schedule to do what God wants me to.
I think it's time for me to stop making excuses and start listening. Now before you think I'm being too hard on myself, let me just say I realize that I am doing my best to follow God. But I also realize that this means I have weaknesses, and I need wake up calls. That's what this is, and if you need it too, take it. God asks for every part of us, our hopes, dreams, lives, days, and relationships. He asks for our obedience. For our very hearts.
