Today is my first full day in Honduras, which means in a few hours we will be going on our first shopping trip, which will probably be to walmart. It will be interesting to see if it is similar to our walmart.
Last night after being dropped off at our home to unpack, we had the evening free. Erin, Laura, and I (We're still awaiting one house mate who is a second year teacher, also name laura) unpacked our things, explored our house, and figured out how to make our internet, TV, and showers work. Our house has so many great little things to explore. There are six bedrooms, and some other random tiny weird rooms. There is a large balcony and an outdoor laundry area with a washer and a clothes line. There are strange ladders that we have vowed to climb up at some point in time. We have a kitchen, dining room, and living room, and a front porch/balcony area that is kind of inside our front door. The strangest thing is that we have so many doors and so many locks! It's a little confusing, but I think I'm getting used to it. We each have our own bathroom too. Crazy. I feel a little spoiled. =)
There are definitely some things that will take getting used to. Our cable tv is mostly in Spanish, all though we do have some English channels. Last night we watched a little bit of "Ruleta de suerte" or wheel of fortune. Everyone seemed so excited on the show. It was fun to watch.
Our school left us a bag with some food in it. So we decided to explore what we had. We had a loaf of bread, a small jar or peanut butter, some corn flakes, ketchup, mustard, and mayo, some "jamon de pavo" (ham of turkey?), american cheese, apples, and a gallon of juice. So we decided we would make grilled turkey and cheese but had no butter or oil for the pan. So instead we decided to stick our sandwiches on a cookie sheet and broil them. The cheese didn't really melt, so basically we had toast with cheese and turkey, but it tasted good to girls who hadn't really eaten anything but some granola bars, crackers, and airplane peanuts all day.
Another thing that will take a while to get used to is the noise. All the houses here are right beside each other and the road is very close to the house. The house are made of cement and are very echo-ey and also the windows are kind of open with bars over them. So you can hear absolutely everything. You hear traffic, and horns (since they are constantly blowing them to let other people know to get out of their way), and sirens, and dogs, and people, and lawn mowers, and some sort of voice that sounds like a walkie talkie... and they all sound as if they are right inside your house. It's so strange, but I think I'll get used to it eventually.
I'll be honest, I probably won't blog this much all the time, but right now I have a lot to say and also a lot of free time. Especially since I woke up at six this morning. Here's my last little tidbit of information. It's currently the rainy season, and I've been told that it means it will rain most days. But if it's anything like yesterday, that's ok with me. It was sunny for a good part of the day and we had a few rain showers/thunderstorms, but they seemed so peaceful.
Pictures to come once our house is settled. I'll give you a tour. =)
