Celebrate
The past week has been so crazy. It may have been the vacation before it, but it certainly was a crazy week. Much to your shock I'm sure, we had another holiday this week, Bible Day. (Pictures to come, small children dressed in costumes = could not be cuter)
So far in the past month we have celebrated:
- Flag Day
- Independence Day
- Children's Day
- Teacher's Day (which really wasn't much of a day because it was a Saturday while we were on vacation.
- Bible Day
and this coming weekend is a long one, because we will be celebrating Armed Forces day, or something like that.
I've never celebrated so many holidays in my life. Not to mention birthdays. Honduras knows how to celebrate. Good thing I love parties and holidays.
In other news, my students have been doing well. There have been up days and down days, but in general I love them. I have taken to the routine of having my students give me a hug or a high five as they exit my classroom. I thought originally, that I was doing this to help them. However, I have discovered that this is also made to help me. When I am requiring myself to show love to these students no matter what has happened with them that day, I find myself feeling that love for them. Even when they are difficult. Even when they are disrespectful. I love them... and most of the time they love me.
I have discovered however that math is "very very boring." I have been trying to figure out ways to make it more interesting, unfortunately, I still have to use the curriculum. The students informed me today that they should be allowed to play games all day. So I'm thinking I need to find more ways to trick them into learning. =)
Some quotes from my dear ones in the past week:
- In describing a prince in the story we were reading,
Student: Miss how do you say a male version of a diva?Is it a divo? Miss why are you laughing?
Me: oh nothing I just thought of something.
Student: the song? *Student Sings* Na na na na a diva is a female version of a hustler...
Me: (laughing harder) I can't believe you know that song.
Me: Your desk looks like a tornado hit it.
Student: It did Miss, because I am the tornado.
ME: So, using your prediction skills, what do you think will happen next in the story?
Student: Well, I think he will go to the mountain and he will meet Rosamund's evil sister. Then she will be very mean to him and he will marry her but not really... and then he will go back...
Me: Hang on a second, Rosamund doesn't have an evil sister. She doesn't even have a sister.
Student: I know Miss, but I was just predicting.
Girl: Oh yes, I love him.
Me: But I thought you loved Sebastian.
Girl: Oh no Miss. That was last week and I didn't love him. I was only acting. I will be a famous actress one day. I love this new boy for real.
My students are also extremely interested in relationships right now. There is a lot of talk about who loves who, etc. Unfortunately, this also means that all of us female teachers in fifth grade are "in love with" the only male teacher, a student teacher who is also in fifth grade. My students have taken to saying oooooh every time I talk to him. Today when he entered the room to ask me a question my students all began to cough "uncontrollably". It's getting a little out of hand. Also, matters were made worse because one of my students saw us together at church yesterday.
Last weekend we also had a teacher's retreat. We went into these beautiful woods in the mountains. We slept in cabins, ate food, worshiped, had campfire, and had a talent show. It was amazing. Although I love looking at the mountains, I realized that I really miss just being outside in nature. There aren't grassy areas with trees I can sit under. There isn't a woods nearby to walk through. I can't see very many stars at night. I didn't even realize how much I missed it, until the moment I sat out under the trees, in the grass, by the campfire, looking at the stars. It was beautiful. God completely used this time to just remind me of how he doesn't just create big things like mountains that declare his majesty, but also beautiful places of nature for us to experience his intimate love for us.
I enjoyed the worship times the most on the retreat. It's just been great to sing in both Spanish and English. I find that singing songs in Spanish really helps me to think about what it is I am singing. On my last note, I wanted to leave you with a song that I have come to love a lot. I don't know it English. I couldn't find an English translation, so here is my rough translation of it. There is an English version, but I don't think it translates quite the same to me.
Señor conoces - Lord you know
mi corazon- my heart
en cuanto te fallo -even when I fail you
se que me amas- i know that you love me
con tu presencia - with your presence
protegeme - protect me
en todo tiempo - in all times
se que me amas - i know that you love me
se que me amas
hoy me postro ante jesus - today I bow before Jesus
diste tu sangre en la cruz - you gave your blood on the cross
no hay otro amor igual - there is not other equal love
el murio resucito - he died, and rose again
sobre la muerte vencio - above death he conquered
nada me separara - nothing will separate me
y escudo eres - my shield you are
mi proteccion - my protection
tu me sostienes - you sustain me
se que me amas - i know that you love me
el velo rasgo - you tore the veil
un camino abrio - a road opened
dijo consumado es - I said it is consumed.
aun en tormentas- even in storms
o tempestad - or in a tempest
tu estas conmigo - you are with me
se que me amas - i know that you love me
se que me amas
Here's the actual english version of the song:
Oh Lord You've searched me
You know my ways
Even when I fail You
I know You love me
Your holy presence
Surrounding me
In every season
I know You love me
I know You love me
Chorus
At the cross I bow my knee
Where Your blood was shed for me
There's no greater love than this
You have overcome the grave
Glory fills the highest place
What can separate me now?
You go before me
You shield my way
Your hand upholds me
I know You love me
Chorus
At the cross I bow my knee
Where Your blood was shed for me
There's no greater love than this
You have overcome the grave
Glory fills the highest place
What can separate me now (x2)
You tore the veil
You made a way
When You said that it is done (x2)
And when the earth fades
falls from my eyes
You stand before me
i know You love me
i know You love me
Chorus
At the cross I bow my knee
Where Your blood was shed for me
There's no greater love than this
You have overcome the grave
Glory fills the highest place
What can separate me now (x2)
You tore the veil
You made a way
When You said that it is done
