Funny how God works...
In many ways, I already feel like I've been here forever. Yesterday after our shopping trip (that was mostly like walmart), we went on a tour of the city. I am feeling ok about living in the city, but to be honest a little overwhelmed. I know that this time is going to take a lot of trust in God. One of the biggest things being safety, the majority of this is simply making smart decisions. Not going out alone, or at night. Taking a male with you when possible. But even with precautions, something can still happen. (sorry mom) However, I was talking with one of my house mates and she told me a quote she had heard.
The safest place to be is the center of God's will
I feel this is exactly where I'm at. I will pray for his protection and hold loosely to material items, knowing that this is not the most important. Thankfully our house is in a very protected area and we have about 20 million locks. So I feel extremely safe here. That really helps me feel at ease overall.
Anyways, on to some more light-hearted things. I have decided that God has definitely placed me here for a reason. Even some little things that may not be much have really made me excited and just seem like little signs that I am supposed to be here:
- First of all, the teachers play ultimate frisbee on sunday afternoons. AWESOME. The same thing I did all through college. =)
- The teachers have a game night. They love Euchre and up and down the river. Which I spent most of the summer playing with the camp staff. AWESOME.
- The teachers have a worship night about once a month, and the guy who used to play the guitar and lead it left, so they are in need of someone to play. Hello, me and my housemate Erin. Had I not spent the whole summer uncomfortably playing guitar at camp I would not have even thought of volunteering for this.
- I met a lot of great new friends. One of the other teachers loves icecream about as much as I do.
- I know it will probably change when school starts, but I love the laid back attitude.
Some things to pray for:
- adjustment and orientation to the city. It is a little difficult to know where you're going because there are no street names and lots of tiny little streets.
- Continued connections with the other teachers, I feel like I'm making friends, but it's hard not to feel at least a little insecure when you're around so many new people.
- confidence as I prepare things for my students
Hope everything is going well at home! Love you all!

Jenn, I love your little signs! They are SO perfect! I'm glad your first few days have gone well. You are in my prayers. Love you!
ReplyDeleteWe miss you already! The Jeffs vote that you teach your colleagues how to play Dutch Blitz and Take One- let us know if you forgot to bring DB! I, however, do not suggest you teach them to play Bohnanza (or however you spell it). Jeff might think otherwise...
ReplyDeleteWe love you and look forward to hear about all of your adventures! :)
Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteI randomly came across your blog tonight, and I'm so glad I did. I read a few of your posts, and it reminds me so much of my time teaching in Lima, Peru. So much so, that I shed a few tears at how closely I can relate. It was a great experience, but it definitely had it's ups and downs. I'll be praying for you throughout the school year as you experience your first year of teaching as well as face the joys and challenges of being in a foreign land far from home. I hope you have a wonderful school year! Let me know if there's anything specific I can be praying for, or if you need a person to talk with who understands :)
Take care and God bless your time in Honduras!!
